Obverse description At center, the United States shield bearing a horizontal scroll inscribed LIBERTY across its middle. Flanking the shield are two poles, one surmounted by a Liberty cap and the other by an eagle displayed. The peripheral legend E · PLURIBUS · UNUM arcs along the upper rim, accompanied by a ring of stars, with the date 1896 positioned at the lower rim. The overall composition reflects Charles Barber's precise neoclassical engraving style characteristic of late 19th-century United States Mint pattern coinage.
