| Описание аверса | The obverse of this experimental pattern features a central octagonal perforation surrounded by a ring of thirteen eight-pointed stars arranged equidistantly around the void, representing the original thirteen states. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery in bold raised lettering, while the date 1884 appears in the lower field between the innermost stars. The coin is bordered by a finely executed beaded rim, characteristic of Philadelphia Mint proof-style pattern coinage of the period. The overall design, attributed to engraver George T. Morgan, reflects the Mint's investigation into holed coinage as a means of distinguishing the five-cent denomination by touch. |

The field between the lettering and the central void is open and unadorned, drawing full attention to the denomination and the decorative elements. A continuous beaded border encircles the entire reverse, consistent with the proof-finish treatment found on most surviving examples of this Judd-1724 pattern. |
