Reverse description A large bold numeral 5 dominates the central field, with the denomination CENTS inscribed immediately below, all enclosed within a wreath of laurel branches tied at the base with a decorative bow knot. The national motto IN GOD WE TRUST arcs along the upper periphery within the beaded border. The overall design is clean and emblematic, characteristic of the transitional pattern coinage produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1866 in anticipation of the Shield nickel series.
