Tàrrega, a market town in the Lleida comarca of Catalonia, was among hundreds of municipalities that issued their own emergency fractional currency during the early months of the Spanish Civil War. The collapse of small-denomination coinage in circulation — hoarded almost immediately after the July 1936 uprising — forced local Republican organizations, unions, and municipal councils to print their own. The Unió Republicana, a centrist Republican party, was an unusual issuer; most Catalan war-issue notes came from ajuntaments or anarcho-syndicalist bodies.
AL#3374 is catalogued in the Turró reference for Catalan Civil War issues, which remains the authoritative work for this material.
