Additional information

Súria is a small Catalan mining town, and its wartime paper money — including this cardboard token — emerged from the near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage during the Spanish Civil War. The Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning fractional currency forced hundreds of Catalan municipalities to print their own emergency issues in 1937. Cardboard was the material of last resort.

The Turró catalog documents over 2,000 such local issues from Catalonia alone.
