Palau Sabardera is a village in the Alt Empordà comarca of Catalonia with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the 1930s. That a agricultural cooperative here issued its own emergency currency during the Civil War is not unusual — hundreds of Catalan municipalities and collectives did the same after the Republican monetary system fragmented following the July 1936 uprising. What is unusual is how few of these hyper-local issues survived at all. Notes from single-village sindicats were produced in tiny quantities, circulated within a tight geographic radius, and were rarely preserved once the war ended and the Nationalist peseta took over.
The Gari catalogue remains the primary reference for Catalan local issues, and the -A suffix here indicates a known variant within the type.
