One of thousands of emergency fractional issues produced by Catalan municipalities and cooperatives during the Civil War years, when Republican-held areas suffered acute shortages of small-denomination coinage almost immediately after July 1936. The Sindicat Agrícola — an agricultural cooperative rather than a financial institution — issued these notes as a purely local necessity, valid only within the village's own economic network. La Pobla de Montornès, a small Tarragona comarca settlement, had neither the infrastructure nor the authority to produce anything more sophisticated.
The thick card stock was a practical choice: thinner paper deteriorated rapidly in daily agricultural use. Gari Montserrat's catalogue documents over a thousand such issues from Catalonia alone, which gives some sense of how fragmented and improvised the Republican monetary response actually was at the village level.
