La Bisbal d'Empordà was among hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued emergency fractional currency during 1936–37, when the Republican government's inability to maintain coin supply left local commerce paralyzed. These small-denomination municipal notes — often printed on card stock rather than proper banknote paper — were purely stopgap instruments, valid only within the issuing town and frequently refused even there.
Turró's catalog documents the series exhaustively, but many of these Catalan municipals survive in small numbers because the issuing bodies themselves were short-lived administrative units, dissolved or superseded as Nationalist forces advanced through the region in 1939.
