During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone experienced a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage — hoarded, melted, or simply absent — forcing thousands of municipalities, cooperatives, and agricultural collectives to print their own emergency fractional currency. The Sindicat Agrícola de Guardiola del Penedès was one of hundreds of Catalan bodies that filled the gap, issuing card-stock vales that functioned as local scrip redeemable only within the community's own commercial network.
The square format is characteristic of many Catalan municipal issues from this period, partly a practical response to paper shortages and partly a means of visual differentiation from official currency. Gari Mon catalogues this as 749-A, implying at least one variant exists within the type.
