5 Céntimos Gelida

Gelida is a small municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish Republican towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when the Republican government's coin supply collapsed under wartime pressure. These local issues — collectively called "moneda local" or "bitllets locals" — were sanctioned by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which gave municipal councils limited authority to print their own low-denomination notes to keep local commerce moving.

The Turró catalog remains the definitive reference for these Catalan municipal issues. Surviving examples from villages as small as Gelida are genuinely scarce; print runs were tiny, redemption was expected, and most were discarded or destroyed after the war.
