Ellar is a small municipality in the comarca of Pallars Sobirà, in the Pyrenean interior of Catalonia. During the Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities issued their own emergency paper fractional currency — vales or xèrics — to compensate for the acute shortage of metallic coinage that hit Republican-held territory after 1936. A comité agrícola as issuing authority places this note squarely in that framework: local agricultural committees frequently took on quasi-administrative roles in the early revolutionary period, including the improvised management of local exchange.
The Garrió-Moragas corpus for Catalan war-era local issues is incomplete, and an unassigned reference number here suggests this piece remains poorly documented.
