Caldes de Malavella, a small spa town in Girona province, issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War — part of the vast proliferation of locally produced moneda local that emerged after the Republican government's 1936 decree authorizing municipalities to fill the acute shortage of small change.
