Additional information

Bràfim is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and like dozens of Catalan towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican Spain collapsed into a coinage vacuum after silver and copper were hoarded or melted. These cardboard discs — technically *cartones* — were a strictly local solution, accepted only within the issuing municipality and worthless a few kilometers away. The Generalitat de Catalunya eventually moved to standardize emergency issues, but many towns had already been printing and cutting their own for months before any central guidance arrived.
