Additional information

By 1938, the Republican government's metal supplies were so depleted by the Civil War that the FNMT resorted to issuing cardboard fractional currency — an almost unthinkable concession for a national mint. This piece was part of a series honoring figures of the Spanish left, with the novelist Vicente Blasco Ibáñez selected presumably for his fierce anti-monarchist politics and international profile, though he had died in French exile a decade earlier, in 1928. The dual Miró references reflect documented varieties in the series, likely differing in reverse printing or cardboard stock.
