Albatárrech is a small municipality in Lleida, Catalonia, and like dozens of similar villages during the Spanish Civil War, its local collectivity — in this case organized under the anarcho-syndicalist banner "Adelante" — issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation after July 1936. The central government in Madrid and the Generalitat in Barcelona both struggled to fill the gap, leaving individual pueblos to improvise.
These hyper-local emissions were produced in tiny quantities, often on whatever paper stock was at hand, sometimes rubber-stamped rather than printed. The AL# cataloging system documents thousands of such issues; survival rates are erratic, tied entirely to whether anyone thought to save them after the war ended badly for the Republic.
