These coins were issued as part of Venezuela's 2007 redenomination, when the Bolívar Fuerte replaced the old bolívar at a rate of 1,000 to 1 — a tacit acknowledgment of inflation that had eroded the prior currency's purchasing power over decades. The redenomination was framed officially as simplification, not crisis management.
By the time production of this type ceased in 2009, inflation was already reasserting itself. Within a decade, Venezuela would redenominate again, twice, rendering even these relatively new coins obsolete before most had meaningfully circulated.
