| Obverse lettering | UNION DES COMMERÇANTS 5c. • MONTAGNAC • |
| Reverse description | The center of the field bears the denomination expressed as '5c.' in large outlined script numerals with an italic stylistic treatment. Two ornamental floral rosette devices flank the denomination vertically, one positioned above and one below the numeral, serving as decorative separators. The field is otherwise plain and unadorned, with no surrounding legend, giving the reverse a simple and functional appearance typical of French merchants' emergency tokens. |

| Additional information |
Montagnac is a small wine-producing commune in the Hérault, and this brass token was almost certainly issued by its merchants' union to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued rural French commerce in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Local chamber tokens of this type circulated within tightly defined commercial networks — accepted by member merchants, redeemable in trade, and essentially invisible to the Banque de France.
The El Mon catalogue reference places it firmly within the documented series of Hérault departmental nécessité coinage.
