Obverse description The crowned shield of Geneva — divided per pale with the Imperial eagle in dexter and a key in sinister — is displayed at center within a beaded inner circle. A radiant sun rises above the shield, its rays extending into the upper field. The Genevan motto legend encircles the design, separated by ornamental stops, with the Christogram IHS completing the inscription. The engraving is executed in a precise neoclassical style consistent with Swiss cantonal coinage of the period.

Reverse description The reverse bears a bold, centrally placed denomination numeral '5' above the word 'CENTIMES' in large capital letters occupying the central field, with the date '1840' below. The circular legend 'REP · ET CANT · DE GENEVE' curves around the upper and lower periphery, separated by dot stops. A prominent beaded border frames the entire reverse design. The overall layout is typographic and unadorned, emphasizing legibility in the tradition of utilitarian cantonal coinage.
