Jean-Jacques Barre was appointed engraver-general at the Paris Mint in 1834, and this 1840 pattern reflects his early attempts to establish a coherent coinage identity for Louis-Philippe's July Monarchy. The piece never entered circulation — official small bronze coinage of the period continued on older designs, and Barre's proposals for the centimes denomination went through multiple rejected iterations before any were adopted.
Gad#146 a) distinguishes this from at least one other variant, suggesting the pattern exists in more than one die state or edge treatment.
