Obverse description The obverse features the rampant Lion of Belgium at center, rendered in high relief against a finely engine-turned cross-hatched background field. The lion faces left with forepaws raised, tail curled upward, in the traditional heraldic passant-rampant posture. The engraver's name BRAEMT appears on a small tablet or cartouche beneath the lion. The peripheral legend L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE arcs across the upper field, flanked at the lower left and right by six-pointed stars, with the date 1861 prominently placed at the bottom of the coin.
