Struck to mark the 25th anniversary of Léopold I's inauguration as Belgium's first king — he took the constitutional oath on July 21, 1831, having been selected by the National Congress following Belgian independence from the Netherlands. The issue was a deliberate piece of dynastic self-congratulation; Léopold had worked methodically for two decades to consolidate the monarchy's legitimacy, and this coin was part of that project.
The BHM-3.1 designation places it within a small commemorative emission, not a circulation striking. Most survivors show minimal wear for exactly that reason.
