Beschrijving keerzijde Central hole surrounded by the denomination numeral '5' and the abbreviation 'c' to its right, rendered in large, prominent relief with radiating sunburst lines emanating from behind the central aperture. To the right of the hole stands a classical allegorical female figure, likely representing the Republic, in a draped standing pose. The engraver's signature 'CH.PILLET' and the word 'ESSAI' appear in the lower field. The Republican motto 'LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ' is inscribed in the upper portion of the legend encircling the design.

Aanvullende informatie

Pillet's 1913 essay series was produced speculatively, at a moment when the French treasury was actively debating a redesign of the small-denomination coinage. These gold trial strikes were never intended for circulation — they exist as presentation pieces made for official evaluation, and the number produced was almost certainly counted in single digits. GEM 17.1 is among the rarest documented entries in the Gadoury Essais et Piéforts catalog, with confirmed auction appearances numbering fewer than a handful in the past three decades.
