| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of General José Artigas, national hero and founding father of Uruguay, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail. The engraver's initials 'HP' appear below the truncation of the shoulder. The legend 'REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' arcs around the upper periphery, while the name 'ARTIGAS' is inscribed below the portrait and the date '1953' appears at the bottom of the field. A closely spaced circle of raised beads frames the entire design near the rim. |

| Reverse description | The large numeral '5' occupies the upper central field, with the denomination legend 'CENTÉSIMOS' arcing beneath it in bold incuse lettering, the whole enclosed within a symmetrical laurel wreath tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The wreath, rendered with fine foliate detail, rises from the lower field on both sides to frame the denomination. A beaded border encircles the entire reverse design, consistent with the obverse treatment. |
