Panama's coinage has always occupied an unusual position — the country adopted the Balboa as its currency in 1904 but simultaneously declared the U.S. dollar legal tender at par, a arrangement that persists today. In practice, Panama has never issued paper currency of its own, making its coins the only domestic physical currency the republic has ever produced. The 5 Centésimos was struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract, as Panama operated no mint of its own.
