Additional information

Somalia gained independence in 1960 through the merger of the former Italian Trust Territory and British Somaliland. This issue came seven years into that union, during a period of elected civilian government that would end abruptly with Siad Barre's military coup in October 1969. The 1967 coinage series was among the last struck under the Somali Republic before that transition extinguished civilian constitutional rule entirely.
