Obverse description The iconic Lion of St. Mark, the traditional symbol of the Venetian Republic, depicted facing front in a heraldic posture with large spread wings and a nimbus (halo) above its head. The lion rests its forepaws upon an open book inscribed with the Evangelist's motto PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS, rendered across two panels. The circular legend GOVERNO PROVVISORIO DI VENEZIA runs along the periphery, with the mint mark Z.V. and a six-pointed star appearing in the lower field; the engraver's signature A. FABRIS is incused along the base.

Reverse description The denomination numeral 5 is prominently displayed in large bold figures at the centre of the field, separated by a horizontal line from the date 1849 below. The circular legend CENTESIMI · DI LIRA CORRENTE surrounds the central design, with a six-pointed star on each side at the legend's terminations. The overall design is plain and typographic in character, typical of the emergency coinage struck during the revolutionary Venetian Republic.
