The 1983 Dominican pattern series, which included this copper 5 centavos piece, was part of an exploratory coinage program evaluating new alloy and design combinations before any formal retooling of circulating issues. Patterns from this program were never approved for circulation and were produced in extremely limited quantities, primarily for official review and archival purposes.
Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Ramón Matías Mella were two of the three founding fathers of Dominican independence, proclaimed in February 1844. Their joint appearance on low-denomination coinage dates to the nationalist commemorative program of the mid-20th century.
