Cuba struck a small number of platinum trial pieces in 1968 as part of an internal review of coinage specifications under the Castro government's restructured monetary administration. These were never intended for circulation — they exist purely as metallurgical and die-testing artifacts, produced to evaluate strike pressure and surface definition against a non-standard planchet material. The reverse-only designation suggests the obverse die was either not yet approved or deliberately withheld from the trial striking.
