The "Restauración de la República" designation commemorates the 1865 expulsion of Spanish forces following the War of Restoration — a conflict that ended Spain's brief re-annexation of the Dominican Republic, the only case in Latin American history of a former colony voluntarily reverting to colonial status and then fighting its way back out. The 1963 issue lands in politically volatile ground: that year saw the democratic presidency of Juan Bosch, the first freely elected Dominican president in nearly four decades, overthrown by military coup just seven months after taking office.
