Colombia suspended silver coinage for small denominations during World War II when strategic metal demands made the old alloy impractical, and this copper-nickel type was introduced as the direct replacement. The series ran unusually long — over two decades — largely because postwar fiscal conservatism in Bogotá resisted redesign expenditure.
