The Banco Nacional de Honduras was established in 1889 but operated under persistent financial strain, and its authority to commission coinage patterns was itself contested during the early twentieth century. This 1909 pattern was never adopted for circulation — Honduras continued relying on imported coinage and foreign currency well into the following decade before a functioning national mint infrastructure materialized.
