Uruguay's 1899 coinage experiments came during a period of active monetary restructuring under the influence of European banking models, with several pattern compositions tested before final production decisions were made. This nickel trial was ultimately rejected — the circulating 5 centavos of the period went out in copper-nickel rather than pure nickel.
KM#Pn33 is sparsely documented in auction records, and surviving examples are almost certainly from a handful of presentation or archival strikes.
