Cuba in 1870 was still a Spanish colony in the middle of the Ten Years' War, the first major insurrection against Spanish rule that began in 1868. Pattern coinage from this period reflects Spanish administrative attempts to establish a distinct Cuban monetary identity while simultaneously suppressing the rebellion — a contradiction that was never resolved before the war ended in 1878 with no independence achieved. This piece never entered circulation.
