Colombia's Banco de la República issued this piece in 1960 to coincide with the sesquicentennial of the country's independence movement, which began with the Bogotazo del 20 de julio in 1810. The commemorative framing was largely political theater — the National Front coalition, formed just two years earlier to end a decade of brutal civil conflict known as La Violencia, was eager to project national unity through any available channel, coins included.
The Restrepo reference places this firmly within the documented series, and the copper-nickel alloy was a deliberate cost-reduction shift from earlier silver-bearing fractional issues.
