| 正面描述 | The obverse features the large numeral '5' prominently displayed in the upper central field, rendered in a bold modern style with a diagonal band or arc sweeping across the digit, accompanied by two small five-pointed stars to the right. Below the numeral, the denomination legend 'CENTAVOS' is inscribed in capital letters, with 'BRASIL' appearing beneath it in a slightly smaller font, separated by a horizontal rule. The overall design is clean and geometric, with the inscriptions confined to the lower portion of the field. |

Brazil's 1989–1990 coinage was issued in the teeth of the Cruzado Novo's collapse, a currency that survived barely two years before hyperinflation — peaking above 1,700% annually — rendered small-denomination coins functionally worthless before they could circulate meaningfully. The switch to stainless steel for this issue was a direct cost-cutting response to rising metal prices eating into seigniorage.
The Cruzado Novo itself was replaced by the Cruzeiro in March 1990, cutting the series short and making the two-year window the only production span this type would see.
