Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty occupies the central field, her hair gathered in loose waves and bound with a diademed headband inscribed LIBERTAD. The peripheral legend REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA arcs around the upper rim, separated from the effigy by a fine beaded border. The date 1902 appears in the lower exergue beneath the truncation. The overall style is characteristic of late 19th-century Colombian coinage, rendered in low to medium relief with fine hair detail.

Additional information

Colombia's 1902 silver coinage was struck under extraordinary duress — the country was in the final, grinding phase of the Thousand Days War, a civil conflict between Liberal and Conservative factions that killed an estimated 100,000 people and left the national treasury functionally destroyed. The reduced fineness of .666 reflects deliberate debasement; prewar Colombian silver had run considerably finer.

The Restrepo reference places this among a cluster of issues whose actual mint of origin remains disputed among specialists.
