The Constitutionalist Army coinage of Chihuahua was produced under Venustiano Carranza's forces during the Mexican Revolution, when federal currency had collapsed in usefulness across the northern states and local military commanders needed a medium of exchange to pay troops and purchase supplies. Chihuahua became one of the most prolific issuers of revolutionary emergency coinage precisely because it was Carranza's base of operations before his campaign south.
