Mozambique's 2006 low-denomination coinage was issued following a currency reform that had taken effect in 2006, when the new metical (MZN) replaced the old metical (MZM) at a rate of 1,000 to 1 — a redenomination made necessary by decades of accumulated inflation stretching back through the civil war that ended in 1992. At face value, the 5 centavos was nearly worthless the moment it was struck, and the denomination effectively disappeared from everyday transactions within a few years.
