This issue belongs to the early Pinochet period, struck while Chile's economy was being restructured under the Chicago Boys — a group of economists who implemented sweeping monetarist reforms that dramatically altered the peso's purchasing power. The 5 centavos denomination was already marginal by 1975 and was effectively obsolete within years as inflation eroded small coinage into irrelevance. Production ceased after 1976.
