5 Centavos

Peru's small-denomination brass coinage of this period survived well past the sol's useful life as inflation steadily eroded purchasing power through the late 1960s and into the 1970s. By the time the military government of Juan Velasco Alvarado nationalized major industries and restructured the economy after 1968, the 5 centavos represented so little value that it was effectively ceremonial in circulation. The denomination was swept away entirely when Peru replaced the sol with the inti in 1985, itself later destroyed by hyperinflation.
