Bolivia's shift to copper-clad steel for this denomination was part of a broader monetary stabilization push following the catastrophic inflation of the mid-1950s, when the boliviano lost so much value that the government eventually replaced it entirely with the peso boliviano in 1963. These small-denomination coins were struck to service everyday transactions in a newly redenominated economy still rebuilding public confidence in its currency.
