Guatemala's 1953 gold 5 centavos is an oddity in the republic's coinage history. The standard circulating issue was struck in silver, but a small number of gold specimens — almost certainly proofs or presentation pieces — were produced under the administration of Jacobo Árbenz. Within a year, a CIA-backed coup would remove Árbenz from power, making any official numismatic output from this government politically inconvenient enough that documentation on these gold strikes remains sparse.
