Macrohon is a small coastal municipality on the southern tip of Leyte, and its wartime emergency scrip belongs to a broader pattern of hyperlocal currency that proliferated across the Philippine archipelago during the Japanese occupation. When the Japanese Military Administration imposed its own currency — the so-called "Mickey Mouse money" — many provincial and municipal governments quietly issued their own guerrilla or emergency notes to sustain local commerce and signal loyalty to the Commonwealth government in exile.
Municipal scrip from small Leyte towns survives in genuinely low numbers. Macrohon's issues were almost certainly hand-signed by local officials and printed or mimeographed in extremely limited quantities, with most destroyed, lost, or deliberately discarded after liberation when U.S. forces returned to Leyte in October 1944.
