Portuguese Guinea's first decimal coinage came late — this 1933 issue inaugurated the colony's own coin series decades after neighboring territories had established theirs. Lisbon had previously satisfied local exchange needs through metropolitan Portuguese coinage and, before that, Cape Verde issues. The decision to produce a dedicated Guinea series reflected administrative reorganization under the Estado Novo, Salazar's corporatist government having taken firm hold of colonial fiscal policy by the early 1930s.
KM#1 by definition: nothing preceded it in the colonial series.
