| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse is printed in red, black, and green tones on a cream ground, with a central guilloche underprint radiating outward from the denomination panel. The issuer's name "BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO" appears in a banner across the top, with "S. TIAGO" and "CINCO CENTAVOS" inscribed in the central cartouche above "MOEDA CORRENTE". A circular vignette at lower centre bears the bank's seal with a steamship, flanked left by a large numeral "5" in an ornate dark oval medallion and right by the Portuguese royal arms, with the date "5 de Novembro de 1914" and place "LISBOA" at lower right. |

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino's Cape Verde issues of 1914 were authorized under emergency provisions prompted by wartime disruption to coin supply — small change had effectively vanished from circulation across Portugal's Atlantic territories as silver was hoarded and metal requisitioned. Bradbury, Wilkinson produced the series for multiple BNU branches simultaneously, with the "S. Tiago" overprint or designation distinguishing notes intended for Santiago Island specifically, Cape Verde's most populous island and administrative center.
P#11A is among the scarcer branch-designated low denominations from this emergency issue. The cotton substrate held up poorly in the humid coastal climate.
