Nicaragua's 1899 coinage was struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract, part of a broader effort by the newly reorganized monetary system following the country's adoption of the córdoba-precursor peso system. Philadelphia handled Nicaraguan coin production for several of these early series because the country lacked its own minting infrastructure — a common arrangement for Central American republics in this period.
