The Banco Hipotecario de la Provincia de Buenos Aires issued this fractional note during the severe monetary crisis that followed Argentina's 1890 Baring Brothers collapse — the same financial implosion that nearly brought down the London money market and forced Buenos Aires Province to scramble for any means of sustaining local exchange. Small-denomination notes like this one filled a genuine void left by hoarded coins.
Printed at the Taller del Museo de La Plata, this is an unusual production credit. The museum's workshop was a government scientific facility, not a commercial press — its involvement reflects just how strained official printing capacity had become by 1891.
