| Obverse description | The obverse carries the bank title BANCO HIPOTECARIO DE LA PROVINCIA DE BUENOS AIRES in bold letterpress across the upper field, flanked by two oval numeral-5 vignettes at left and right. A central Argentine coat of arms medallion anchors the design, with the serial number prefixed 'No.' and the issuance data 'PRIMERA EMISION — LA PLATA, JULIO DE 1891' arranged below. The denomination CINCO CENTAVOS is printed in large display type at centre, with the legal tender clause 'Este bono al portador emitido con arreglo a la Ley de 14 de Julio de 1891 representa' and 'MONEDA NACIONAL DE CURSO LEGAL' completing the text panel, all within a repeated guilloche border reading 'CINCO' continuously. |

| Reverse description | The reverse is dominated by a lengthy legal text block under the heading 'Ley de 14 de Julio de 1891', setting out Article 4 in five numbered clauses governing coupon amortisation and security provisions for bondholders. The text is printed in a small, dense letterpress typeface on a plain ground, framed by a repeated scalloped guilloche border with numeral-5 corner pieces. The printer's imprint 'TALLERES DEL MUSEO DE LA PLATA' appears in small type at the lower margin. |

The Banco Hipotecario de la Provincia de Buenos Aires issued this fractional note during the severe monetary crisis that followed Argentina's 1890 Baring Brothers collapse — the same financial implosion that nearly brought down the London money market and forced Buenos Aires Province to scramble for any means of sustaining local exchange. Small-denomination notes like this one filled a genuine void left by hoarded coins.
Printed at the Taller del Museo de La Plata, this is an unusual production credit. The museum's workshop was a government scientific facility, not a commercial press — its involvement reflects just how strained official printing capacity had become by 1891.
