Honduras adopted the decimal peso system in 1871, but chronic political instability and repeated government turnover through the 1880s and 1890s made consistent coinage nearly impossible to sustain domestically. These small silver pieces were struck at the Tegucigalpa mint during a period when the country cycled through dozens of administrations, and mintage figures were rarely documented with any care. The 1871 monetary reform itself was partly modeled on the broader Central American effort toward regional currency standardization — an ambition that never fully materialized.
