California labor law occasionally pushed back on wage-in-scrip arrangements, which makes the precise operating context of these notes worth knowing before assuming straightforward retail use.
Surviving examples are scarce simply because low-denomination scrip was spent, discarded, or redeemed and destroyed. Nobody kept a nickel.
